Named after the year the Vegetarian Society formed, 1847 was established by Damien Davenport in Manchester city centre in 2010 and has since opened in the centre of Birmingham.
Our aim is to serve exceptional British food alongside a full range of cocktails, spirits, wines and beers.

Located in the beautiful Great Western arcade, 1847 – Birmingham is on the doorstep of the cathedral, galleries, theatres and shopping district. It is also positioned directly opposite Snow Hill train station making it very easy to travel to. The arcade houses many independent businesses that are well worth a visit!

Everyone has food that means something more to them than sustenance. Meals shared with loved ones past, present and future. I’m not sure I ever meant to be a chef – but other modes of telling stories I was afraid of forgetting kept falling short. Every novel I started writing all too quickly became a poor derivative shadow of whatever I had read most recently (most of them involved wizards that lived under a staircase), and my dreams of becoming a rockstar fell apart when it became apparent that I couldn’t sing – our chefs will vouch for the latter. So it’s food that takes me back, and a culture of memory, nostalgia and emotion that drives our kitchen teams.
Our menus are the product of our collective experiences, and the resultant cooking is an unashamedly magpie cuisine, borrowing inspiration and ingredients from pretty much everywhere – memory, film, music, books and square pegs in round holes. Such is the joy of sharing in food that takes its inspiration from everything; we’re inspired by folk music, fawlty towers and 99 flakes, especially the days when they actually cost 99p.
We want to be the most innovative and ambitious vegetarian restaurants in the UK, and work tirelessly on new concepts, flavours and ways of improving our customer experience. We would be nothing without our wonderful customers who support and follow us on this journey, and welcome their input and involvement. Impress your friends by broadening your own skills or team build with a small group of friends/colleagues; the 1847 cookery school is your chance to spend time with our Development Chef Alex Claridge and learn to cook modern vegetarian dishes. We’ll provide the ingredients, knowledge and specifications of each dish for you to be able to recreate at home. Each course will cover one starter, one main course & one dessert using the best seasonal produce. £55 per person lasting 3 hours

Bistro 1847 is a small collection of vegetarian bistro’s within the UK. Our first opened in Manchester city centre back in Spring 2010 with a second in the heart of Birmingham during Autumn 2013.
Due to our plans to expand we are always looking for people passionate about hospitality whether that be chefs, front of house staff or management.
Our chefs will work closely with our Development Chef Alex Claridge. His food is primarily British, with a real sense of humour and ambition to push the boundaries of meat-free cooking – you’ll find dishes influenced by wholefoods, but equally expect ingredients and techniques from the world of fine dining.
Our front of house teams work closely with our operations manager who strives to create an experience second to none for our customers whilst developing and offering an exciting cocktail, wine, beer and spirit list.
With each new site, we also look for management positions, whether that be in the restaurants themselves or based within our head offices in central Manchester.
